Prospect Spotlight: Saveon Webster (2019)
Halfway through high school, but a newcomer to Alachua-Santa Fe, Saveon Webster is establishing himself as one of the more athletically-sound players on the roster.
The Gainesville-Eastside transfer can double as 2-or-3 man. One of the most aggressive on the floor when it comes to defense. He fights—through screens, when his jersey’s being held, everything.
Through all of those defensive distractions, Webster’s head stays on a swivel. You constantly see his eyes darting from one side to the other, gauging where everyone is positioned on the floor. He likes to get his hands out in the passing lanes and make ball-handlers think twice about dishing it off for a potential steal.
As far as his own passing ability goes, he’s got a great pace to his dribbling and can put the ball on a string when assisting. Webster knows how to finish strong at the cup off the dribble-drive. But, if you need a 10-15 foot jumper at any time, Sav can deliver.
Above all else, watching his pursuit of the ball on offensive rebounds is great to see. Even on his own miss—which we’re starting to see less of as the game ages—he’ll sprint to the rack to try and get the board.
Webster’s main goal as a newly-dubbed Raider is fitting-in with his new team. He’s not trying to come in and negatively shake-up a squad coming-off a regional semifinal berth, last season.
