Prospect Spotlight: Rick Smith (2018)
Out of all the single-sport athletes on Buchholz head coach Bob Horodyski’s hoops squad, he says Smith is the most college-ready out of the bunch.
Standing around 6’4”, Smith has been moved to wing-spot and can play the 4-5 position if they switch a small ball lineup. Regardless of the assignment, Smith can dribble up-court and pop a three in your face at any given moment. He’s by far one of, if not the best, trey-ball shooter on the team.
He’s long-armed, makes his presence known on the defensive end with an ability to deflect entry passes while guarding wing players. This rising senior will contest every shot his man attempts to get off, as well as commit to boxing-out for every rebound chance.
Smith is extremely strong when it comes to his lower-body. This allows him to stand firm even against some bigger guys who try to post him up. Definitely a guy who can become an anchor for a defense.
Now, the next thing he’s working on is developing his skills as a leader. Smith has a reserved personality. Although, he makes sure to lead by example while on the floor. His next challenge, according to coach Horodyski, is making sure he can balance being both an action leader, and a vocal one. This will be pivotal in how far the ‘Cats go this upcoming season.
However, if he can continue to produce from three the way he does, as well as remain a staple on defense, Smith and his crew can make an impact against anyone.
