Levy County Shootout Standouts: (Pt. 3 of 4)
The first annual Levy County Shootout, hosted by coach Larry Walker’s Williston High School boys hoops program, featured eight local area squads looking to claim their place as top dog in the city—at least until November. There were great performances, all around. Here’s part three of four of the top standouts from the weekend.
Jeremiah James – Williston High School
Out of all the point guards seen in the tourney, this rising sophomore had one of the biggest leadership roles on his squad. A floor general, James stayed very vocal on offense while possessing great dribbling ability. His off-the-dribble pull-up jumper game is just as solid. Excited to see him grow in the game.
Carlos Grubbs – Dunnellon High School
Grubbs is a 6’5” rising junior that was one of the quicker players I saw which were that height or taller. His play was filled with hustle. The team trusted him with the ball in his hands, has solid handles and shot well off-the-dribble. He can bring the D out for a three or drive it in for a dunk. Take your pick!
Aaron Dawson – Dixie County High School
The rising senior doubles as a football player and I can understand why. His quickness can translate to any sport. He knows how to get to the rack and finish. Dawson was one of the more pesky defenders at 5’11”. Definitely a guy who can get on ball-handlers nerves really quickly.
Carlos Williams – Dixie County High School
Even more than the fact he’s a marksman from three, what stood out is that it’s one of those line-drive type of threes. Don’t question it. It goes in. The rising junior worked the ball well off the wing, making great passing decisions while being an asset for scoring all throughout the weekend.
Jacques McCall – Dunnellon High School
McCall, a rising senior, is built similar to Kevin Durant, minus the height. This 6’2” wing is long-armed, making it a bit easier to guard the perimeter. He also never seemed to get too tired when out on the floor. His three-point shot is solid, has a great form with it. Just needs a bit of weight. But, then again, so did Durant in 2007.
