Prospect Spotlight: Yonexis Valdez (2018)
Being undersized isn’t an issue for 2018 guard Yonexis Valdez.
The rising senior averaged 17 points, 6.0 assists. 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks at the International School of Broward last year. The Dominican-born Valdez is headed to Hallandale for his final varsity season.
The 5’6″, 150-pounder says he learned how to attack the basketball at the right time this past season. Valdez also says the biggest part of his game that grew was his ability to feed his teammates and confuse defenders with what he was going to do with the ball.
This is what he expects in terms of his role at Hallandale this season.
“I will be able to lead my team and also to score the ball when needed and get my teammates open to feed them,” Valdez told Prep Hoops Florida. “I moved to Hallandale because I lived about 20 minutes away from the school I was at and my coach was no longer to pick me up so I came to my home school.”
He plans to play in a good amount of tournaments this summer and is currently figuring out which travel team he’ll be running with.
Starting his basketball life at age 12, Valdez points to his ability to attack the basket and finish with contact as his biggest strengths. He’s aiming to improve his shot off the dribble.
Currently, no offers have come for Valdez, but he’s drawn interest from Albion College and King’s College. The move to Class 6A Hallandale will be instrumental to Valdez’s progressions. Look for him to have a sound senior campaign.
