Skyelar Potter Prospect Spotlight (2018)
Skyelar Potter earned his first D1 offer last week.
“He got an offer last week from Lipscomb,” said Warren Central Head Coach William Unseld. “Kentucky Wesleyan offered him last year.”
A 6-foot-3 guard, Potter began attracting D1 attention in the last couple months.
Accepting the Challenge
Before Christmas 2016, the Warren Central Dragons were already hurting.
“We lost our starting PG six games in,” said Coach Unseld. “We lost him to a calf injury for the season. Right after Christmas we lost another kid, who broke his hand, for the season.”
The junior Skyelar Potter watched as teammate after teammate went down.
“One of our point guards, who started a lot for us in November didn’t get back until January,” said Coach Unseld. “I got a sophomore who is really talented, who broke his hand. And another kid…”
The string of injuries placed a heavier burden on Potter.
Veteran Skyelar Potter found himself needing to score. The impetus to fill up the nets was immediate.
Potter not only continued to score in bunches, he registered staggeringly accurate three-point numbers in the face of targeting defenses.
“He hit 10 3’s, broke a school record,” said Coach Unseld. “He shot 40% and he didn’t get many open looks after Christmas.”
Two starters sustaining injuries had a deep impact on the way defenses were able to defend Potter.
“We had 2 starters go out with injuries,” said Coach Unseld.
Coach Unseld detailed how Potter buried shots under duress. Beyond his shooting prowess, a skill that has never been more revered, Skyelar Potter also gives coaches energy.
“One thing he has always been able to do is rebound,” said Coach Unseld. “He is so athletic and the coaches love how he rebounds.”
The 6-foot-3 guard was described by Coach Unseld as “strong, athletic guard.” Warren Central’s coach also labeled Potter “one of the most athletic kids have had at Warren Central.”
Recruitment
Skyelar Potter delivered in the winter and looks to reap the rewards during AAU’s summer. Playing with WKY Elite 17u Potter will attract D1 coaches throughout the region.
“Belmont…will be in next week looking at him,” said Coach Unseld. “Western (Kentucky) is recruiting him. Mississippi State is doing some stuff with him.”
April of the junior season is always a jam-packed recruiting month. Potter’s stock could skyrocket in the coming weeks.
