Prospect Spotlight: Kyran Jones (2017)
Bowling Green Purple starter Kyran Jones won a state championship this winter. The time has come for Jones to focus on the next stage of his career.
PrepHoops.com discussed his limited recruitment March 1st. Time has changed much.
“He has got right now, probably a half a dozen junior colleges,” said Bowling Green High School Head Coach D.G. Sherrill. “He has probably six or seven opportunities.”
Jones plays a rugged, yet fluid wing. In high school he completely dominated the glass against opposing frontcourts. Thankfully Coach Sherrill helped and allowed Jones to develop skills away from the tin, or Jones’ career might have hit an abrupt wall after graduation.
“His phone is ringing off the hook,” said Coach Sherrill.
According to Coach Sherrill, Jones took a visit to Shawnee Community College.
“He is going down to Jackson Community College (TN),” said Coach Sherrill. “So far that is where he has been. Iowa Christian is talking to him pretty hard.”
Iowa Christian has been pursuing Jones for months, talking with him almost every day.
“I will be honest with you, it is pretty fast and furious,” said Coach Sherrill. “A host of NAIA schools have reached out. A host of D2 schools have reached out.”
Jones is able to sign immediately, as Late Signing Period kicked off Wednesday morning.
Evaluation
College coaches might first wonder about Kyran Jones’ best position.
Standing slightly taller than 6-foot-5, Jones appears as muscular as an undersized forward. The style of play suggest a different path though.
“I think they like that he is physical,” said Coach Sherrill. “He has great range. He is a great rebounder. Really good athlete. Can score in lots of different ways. Really good motor.”
In an age of ‘3-and-D’ Kyran is the perfect defensive option. Versatility and strength allow him to compete on that critical end of the floor.
“He is a really good defender,” said BGHS Coach Sherrill. “Any 3/4 kids he can always defend them. Can play multiple spots on the floor.”
