Prospect Spotlight: Trey McCray (2018)
Trey McCray is one of the most quietly-humble kids I’ve come across, but his game certainly can’t go unnoticed.
The Gainesville-Santa Fe junior and Upward Stars PG/SG has started his AAU season off strong, scorching defenses with his outside shooting. He’s a coach-on-the-floor, knows how to band a team together and direct the offense. McCray is the proverbial floor general for any team he plays for.
The 5’9”, 150-pounder believes his defense, IQ and passing game are the three strongest keys to his game, at this moment. He admitted struggles in the defensive area up until this past season when he really honed in on the art. He’s definitely one of the more patient hoopers I’ve seen live, hence the great decision-making when on-the-floor with the rock in his hand.
McCray isn’t shy on speaking about his faults, either. He recognizes that because of his size, players will look at him like he’s a defensive liability. He’s aiming to get stronger this summer to thwart, this. Becoming more of a vocal leader, and not just one who leads solely by example, is a high note on the list of improvements for McCray.
He’s paying close attention to players like Steph Curry and Isaiah Thomas, particularly Thomas because they’re similar in height. He admires the way Thomas gets to the bucket and hopes to learn a few things by studying his film.
McCray doesn’t have any looks or offers at the moment, but if scouts can get a chance to see him this summer, they’ll like what they’re looking at.
