Prospect Spotlight: Robert Gomez (2019)
Robert Gomez is someone who stood out last September at our fall event.
After averaging 11.4 points per game as a sophomore, the 6’3″, 184-pounder is in for an expanded role next season at Springstead. He flashed his skills once again this past month at The Top Rank Showcase Orlando.
He called last season a great experience for him. The Eagles finished with a 14-10 record as Gomez led the team in scoring.
“It was our first year together as a team. We went through good and bad times, but at the end, we came together and ended up with the second-best record in school history,” Gomez told Prep Hoops Florida. “My coach put a lot of trust in me, which helped me grow my game, as I was able to play all five positions.”
Gomez has big plans for this summer ahead as he’ll be playing for the Tampa Titans.
“I’m going to put in as much work as I can to increase my game, my IQ, my strength, my speed and my all-around skills,” he said. “The Titans organization do a great job making it feel like a family.”
Starting basketball at age 5, Gomez says his dad used to take him to shoot hoops with his brothers. He credits his dad for teaching him the game, how to be tough and the fundamentals.
In terms of his biggest strengths and what he wants to improve on, this is what Gomez pointed to.
“I never give up on plays and I don’t let anybody outwork me. I’m a versatile player and I’m able to play all five positions on the court,” he said. “What I want to improve is to continue to learn about basketball, get bigger, stronger and faster and continue to develop my game. I believe there is always room for improvement.”
The 16-year-old says he doesn’t just like basketball, he loves it. He calls the game his passion.
“When all my friends are at parties and at the beach, I’m in the gym for hours each day working on achieving my dream to play at the next level,” Gomez said.
An energetic and savvy player, Gomez is on the fast track right now. He’s getting taller, stronger and his sophomore season really helped him gain more confidence. Look for his work with the Tampa Titans benefits him plenty this summer. Gomez is a 2019 guard to watch.
