Prospect Spotlight: Malik Robertson (2018)
Malik Robertson will be a pinnacle for the Gainesville-Eastside Rams this upcoming fall, but the Upward Stars AAU squad is making sure he’s ready for the leap.
Standing at 6’5”, 225 pounds, the junior power-forward/center has experience playing the other three roles, as well. He’s a guy that aspires to do any and every thing asked of him.
Three of the strongest areas in his game all come from beneath three-point line. One, Robertson loves to attack the hoop. In the games I’ve seen of him at Eastside and with the Stars, he’s extremely aggressive off-the-dribble. The low-block area is a safe haven for Robertson.
Two, he knows how to position himself in the paint—whether on the offensive or defensive end. Boxing-out, rebounding and put-backs are easy to come by for Robertson. Three, the mid-range jumper.
Reminiscent of Timmy Duncan, Robertson has used the glass on his fair share of 12-to-15 footers. Get a good crease of space in-between him and the defender, and he’s knocking it down more often than not.
Robertson has spent some solo time developing these crafts.
“If I don’t have anything to do, if I don’t have any homework, I’ll go to the courts by myself,” Robertson said. “I have cones. I go there and workout.”
Three tools he wants to sharpen? Mental toughness, dribbling and three-point shooting. This summer will be a critical time to strengthen those areas, with the last high school season on the horizon.
Robertson is currently offer-less. Although, he believes if he stays in the weight room and continues the grind of getting better, rewards will follow.
