Prospect Spotlight: Jake Ohmer (2017)
Entering last week’s Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Basketball Tournament, Scott High School’s Jake Ohmer was verbally committed to play both basketball and baseball at the University of the Cumberlands.
After scoring 106 points in his final three high school hoops games on Kentucky’s biggest stage, Ohmer caught the eyes of many – including Western Kentucky University head coach Rick Stansbury – who was also impressed with the guard’s game and offered him a full scholarship.
Ohmer, being handed his first Division I scholarship, verbally committed to become a Hilltopper on Monday via Twitter:

Ohmer averaged 35.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.0 steals over the three games he and the Eagles played in at Rupp Arena. He poured in 41 points in a 77-65 win over Harlan County in Wednesday’s first round. In his final game, a semifinal loss to Bowling Green on Saturday, Ohmer dropped 33 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
“Jake’s incredible,” Scott head coach Steve Fromeyer said following Saturday’s loss. “He has left a legacy at Scott High School. It’s something he won’t forget. It’s something his family and his brother won’t forget. Fifteen years from now when they all have beer bellies at Thanksgiving and they’re playing with their kids, they’ll be talking about it. It’s something they all got to experience together.”
For the 2016-17 season, Ohmer averaged 27.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the field. He also went 41.6 percent (79 of 190) from three-point range and 86 percent from the free-throw line.
Ohmer joins Kentucky Mr. Basketball winner Taveion Hollingsworth as the second in-state guard to join WKU’s program.
