Any time a player can lead his team to a historic finish, college coaches start to take notice, and that is exactly what’s happening for 6’3 2018 wing Jake Costello of South Albany HS. Prior to this season the Rebels had never advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Along with junior guard Jaden Guilford, the Rebels are poised for a big off season and even bigger things in the 2017-18 season.
Costello who averaged 18.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this year on his way to being named 1st team all league had this to say about the state tournament atmosphere and experience, “it was incredible to come out on the floor at Gill Coliseum and see so many people dressed in red. It really showed that our South Albany community was proud and grateful of what we had accomplished.” “We may have been a little in awe of just being in the tournament and we didn’t play our best basketball. That will only serve to motivate our team to improve and get back to state next year.”
The attention shifted to recruiting and what the 3 sport star has in mind for his college career: “I definitely want to pursue college basketball, so that will be a huge part of my decision. My coach is just starting to hear from some college programs around the northwest like Lewis & Clark, Linn Benton, and some others. I’m excited about playing in some aau events this year and finding the right fit for college.” “I’m looking for a program that likes to play at a fast pace and is aggressive defensively. My relationship with the coaches and my future teammates will be really important in my decision.” When asked to assess, his strengths and weaknesses as a player, Costello was very open and honest. “My biggest strength is my athleticism and ability to get to the basket. Right now I’d describe myself as a scorer. My area of focus for the off season will be to become a better ball handler and work on my perimeter shooting. I’d like to be a bigger threat from the 3 point range next season.”
Costello’s best basketball is in front of him and we are excited to monitor his progress and development in the upcoming AAU and high school seasons.
