Recruiting Report: Jerry Higgins (2018)
After playing in the Division III State Championship in his first two seasons, Jerry Higgins (2018) from Villa Angela-St. Joseph’s (VASJ) is one game away from making it to three straight.
Experience is surely going to be an advantage for the point guard, as they prepare to take on Proctorville Fairland on Friday morning.
“I mean, my first two years I’ve been to Columbus. So it’s nothing new. I’ve been there, I’ve played on that floor. I know what the whole experience is. So, while the other teams may be in shock, I’ve done it before and I can use it to my advantage,” Higgins said.
“I mean, I feel pretty confident. [Proctorville Fairland is] kind of an equal opportunity offense. They’re first starting five will have players who average double figures, they all can score. They like to push the ball just like us, so it should be a good one.”
For those who haven’t seen Higgins and VASJ since they were last in Columbus, Higgins role has increased. With the graduation of seniors, he’s been asked to both score and distribute more often. Basically, he has the ball more.
Since we last caught up with Higgins, he hasn’t picked up another scholarship offer. Although Fairmont State remains the only offer, high-academic Division I programs have started reaching out to the 4.2 GPA student-athelte.
“Army has been on me really heavy. There have been a few other schools that have been contacting me, Cornell,” Higgins said.
Higgins identified academics as an important factor in his eventual decision. He’d like to major in sports medicine.
We also caught his pulse on the chances of landing at Fairmont State, a Division II program in West Virginia.
“I’m not for sure, because there’s rumors that they’re coach is going to be going to Cleveland State with the vacancy there,” Higgins said.
For those who aren’t in Columbus this weekend, you can catch the 5’9″ point guard on a loaded Ohio Basketball Club team for his final AAU season.
