The 5-foot-9 point guard did not pick up any additional offers this offseason while playing with Ohio Basketball Club, but he did pick up some low-major Division I interest.
“No one has offered me since, but I’ve been in contact with Army and also Oral Roberts University, they’ve reached out to me. And Akron University as well,” said Higgins.
“I think Oral Roberts will probably be the next to offer. I talked to one of their assistant coaches and they came and saw me in Vegas and really liked me, and we’ve been talking ever since.”
With still plenty of time left for his recruitment to materialize, Higgins mentioned to PHOH what he’s hoping for over the next 12 months.
“I just hope that I can show other coaches that my height is something that they shouldn’t be worried about, and how much heart I have,” he said.
“I’m hoping for more interest, and obviously more offers. But that will take care of itself. I’m just working on my game and being able to show what I have to offer.”
Higgins has been working diligently since the spring to improve his game, and his progress has come mostly with his jumper.
“Since the spring I’ve been working on my jump shot, and I think it will be key for me this season,” he said. “We lost a senior last year who averaged almost 20 points per game, so I’ll have to up my scoring and adding a jumper will be key.”
After a sophomore season learning the ropes and helping his team to a runner-up finish at the state tournament, Higgins says his role will increase greatly this winter.
“Last year I had to be a threat, but not that much. And this season I’ll have to be a threat on the ball and off the ball, and I’ll need to be able to find my teammates. We have a 6-foot-8 sophomore who’s getting interest from Kansas and Arizona (Alonzo Gafney), so definitely the pick-and-roll between me and him will be key this year,” said Higgins.
“My role is to basically be the leader and the general of this team, and I just want to lead this team in all situations.”
