Bowling Green and Russellville squared off in the championship game of the 4th Region Tournament on Tuesday evening at Western Kentucky University’s E.A. Diddle Arena. The Purples played strong on both ends of the floor and limited the Panthers from ever getting into a rhythm.
Thanks to a stellar performance from guard Zion Harmon and forward Terry Taylor, Bowling Green (32-2) beat Franklin-Simpson, 81-62, to advance to the 2017 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen, where it’ll face 1st Region champion Graves County on Wednesday, March 15 at 11 a.m. CST at Rupp Arena.
- Most Valuable Player: Zion Harmon, Bowling Green — The young, but talented athlete was one of the key leaders for the Purples on Tuesday. The 8th grade grade guard scored 25 points to carry Bowling Green to a season-extending victory. Harmon played his style of game all throughout the contest and was a threat for Russellville.
- Best Offensive Performance: Terry Taylor, Bowling Green — Taylor put on an impressive offensive performance on Tuesday night. Taylor, an Austin Peay signee, was virtually unstoppable knocking down big-time shots on Tuesday. He scored 22 points to be one of Bowling Green’s leading scorers. Taylor’s scoring came in a variety of ways, including layups, free-throws and mid-range pull-up jumpers.
- Best Defensive Performance: Terry Taylor, Bowling Green — As he is also known for his offensive game, Taylor also made his defensive presence felt all night long. The strong forward played tenacious defense and made many crucial steals while also blocking multiple shots.
- Best Rebounder: Terry Taylor, Bowling Green — Taylor grabbed 17 rebounds in the game. He made a handful of crucial rebounds Wednesday that set up scoring opportunities on the opposite end of the court, as well as offensive boards that gave his team second chances.
- Best Coaching Decision/Strategy: Sherrill’s playcalling, Bowling Green — The best coaching decision or strategy of the game was Coach D.G. Sherrill’s playcalling. Sherrill called the proper plays and used his jam-packed basketball mind to guide his talented team to their fourth-straight Region crown and another birth into the State Tournament.
