Bowling Green and Barren County squared off in the opening quarterfinal game of the 4th Region Tournament on Tuesday night at Western Kentucky University’s E.A. Diddle Arena. The Purples came out of the gates firing on all cylinders – and did that throughout the entire contest, never allowing the Trojans to get into a rhythm.
Thanks to a stellar performance from eighth-grader Zion Harmon, Bowling Green (30-2) knocked off Barren County by a score of 62-45 to advance to next Monday’s semifinal round and record its 23rd-straight victory.
- Most Valuable Player: Zion Harmon, Bowling Green — The young, but talented guard was one of the key leaders for the Purples on Tuesday. The 8th-grader scored 19 points to carry Bowling Green to a season-extending victory. Harmon quickly found his shot and let it fly all throughout the contest.
- Best Offensive Performance: Zion Harmon, Bowling Green — Harmon put on an impressive offensive performance on Tuesday night. Harmon is physically gifted and was virtually unstoppable knocking down big-time shots on Tuesday. He scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting on the night, including a 3-of-4 showing from three-point territory. Harmon’s scoring came in a variety of ways, including layups, mid-range pull-up jumpers and threes.
- Best Defensive Performance: Terry Taylor, Bowling Green — Taylor made his defensive presence felt all night long. The strong forward played tenacious defense and made many crucial steals. He also scored 15 points to be one of the Purples’ leading scorers.
- Best Rebounder: Kyran Jones, Bowling Green — Jones grabbed 8 rebounds in the game. He made a handful of crucial rebounds Tuesday that set up scoring opportunities on the opposite end of the court, as well as offensive boards that gave his team second chances.
- Best Coaching Decision/Strategy: Cunningham‘s gameplan, Barren County — The best coaching decision or strategy of the game was Coach Warren Cunningham’s gameplan. As his Barren County club was matched up with the state’s top-ranked club, the veteran playcaller had a strong gameplan that allowed his young team to compete at a high level all throughout the game.
