High School Look Back: Jacoby Harris (Owensboro)
His high school career may have come to an end earlier than he wanted it to, but Owensboro High School’s Jacoby Harris can reminisce on an exceptional run throughout his five years of prep basketball. Although he was tasked with being the leader of his Red Devils team, Harris overcame many obstacles and found a way to land his Owensboro squad in the KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen not once, but twice.
“Through my five years of high school basketball, it’s defiantly been a fun ride,” Harris said. “My success in high school is unmatched. I’ve been to the State Tournament two times in my freshman and sophomore year. Sophomore year I won State and got First Team All-State. Junior and senior year I got All (9th) District.”
Although his final season of prep basketball didn’t play out as he had wished for it to, Harris was the second leading scorer on the Red Devils’ club, averaging 13.7 points per game to go along with 2.0 rebounds per outing. Harris also shot an impressive 48.8 percent from the field in 2016-17.
“Senior year wasn’t really how I wanted it to go,” the player stated. “We lost in the First Round of the District Tournament.”
Despite suffering that loss, Harris has a bright future ahead of himself, as he plans to take his talents to the next level following graduation from OHS.
“My plans for after graduation is that I will be attending a JUCO school,” Harris noted. “I am not signed anywhere right now.”
As Harris left a mark on the Owensboro High School boys’ basketball program, he has a message for the athletes still playing at the prep level:
“My message for all the players still playing high school basketball is to cherish every moment you step onto the court and don’t take anything for granted,” Harris added. “Leave everything out on the court.”
