Getting to know 2020 F Keano Calderon
2020 wing Keano Calderon got his feet wet this past season for a very strong Dr. Phillips program.
Calderon was fortunate enough to play in head coach Anthony Long’s final season there. The longtime Panthers head coach stepped down in February after guiding the school to three state title games (2007, 2010, 2011) and a 19-7 record last season.
Dr. Phillips fell to Oak Ridge in the Class 9A region semifinal. Calderon called his freshman year one to remember despite the fact it didn’t end the way he wanted to.
“Coach Long is an amazing coach and he taught me a lot about the game and how to use your skills to your advantage,” Calderon told Prep Hoops Florida. “Also playing with an amazing group of brothers. The funniest part I’d have to say was going to Hawaii and having an amazing time at the Lolani Classic.”
Calderon, who stands at 6’4″, 178 lbs. played off the bench in a rotational role last season. His focus now is to earn his first offer and be the best player he can be and compete at the highest level possible.
He’ll be running with the Florida Vipers this summer.
Starting his basketball life at age 8, Calderon was a football player first but says that basketball quickly became his main passion.
He pointed to his ability to get to the rim, finish strong and hit open shots as his biggest strengths. Calderon is aiming to improve his all-around defensive game.
It’s all a process, but he is quickly figuring out how to be a successful varsity player. With the Panthers losing senior Nick Smith to graduation, Calderon should have a chance to compete for his old job out on the wing. Look for him to become a name that you remember this upcoming season.
