For Seffner Christian (21-6), senior Reid Walker led the way with a game-high 22 points. The Blue Jackets earned an 18-point night from junior Winston Dessesow.
On Thursday night, the Crusaders will play host to Orangewood Christian while Admiral Farragut will travel to First Academy in the region quarterfinal round.
Here are the top 10 performers from this matchup.
MVP: Reid Walker (Seffner Christian)
It was the Reid Walker show on Saturday night. The savvy senior scored all six of his team’s points in the opening quarter. He was held to three points in the second quarter, but heated up in the third with five points. In the fourth quarter, he scored eight points including six free throws. In fact, Walker was a perfect 8-of-8 from the line. He also hit two 3’s.
Best offensive performance: Cross Meehan (Admiral Farragut)
Senior guard Cross Meehan is a quietly sound point man. He scored 18 points and dished out some nice passes to his team. Meehan used his elusiveness to score inside and also connected on a pair of 3’s. Undersized at 5’10”, Meehan is a pure energizer.
Best defensive performance: Donald Jorden (Seffner Christian)
With six points on the night, senior Donald Jorden did what he needed to do offensively for his team to pull out the victory. His defense was sound throughout. He had a couple of key moments with a block and full court pass in transition. Also, a steal proved to be big. Jorden is good in the paint defensively.
Best intangibles: Derek Webster (Seffner Christian)
Admiral Farragut kept Derek Webster in check for the most part, but the senior was still able to make an impact with six points. Webster set his teammates up inside more often than not. He wasn’t forcing any shots which proved to be a smart decision.
Best catch and shoot guy: Winston Dessosow (Admiral Farragut)
At 6’0″, 170 lbs., Winston Dessosow bounces around the court. He’s fluid with his sprints and his outside shooting is beyond impressive. He scored 18 points in this one which included three 3’s, two in the fourth quarter alone.
Best under-the-radar performance: Eli Curry (Admiral Farragut)
Late in the game, junior guard Eli Curry came alive with five straight points. His 3-pointer cut the deficit to five points, but it was too late for a rally with 7.4 seconds left. Curry will play a bigger role next season.
Best worker: Darius Lue (Seffner Christian)
Senior guard Darius Lue scored 12 points including five in the fourth quarter as Seffner Christian pulled away. He scored his team’s final six points of the third quarter cutting the deficit to one with eight minutes left. Lue made 1-of-2 free throws late in the third quarter, then caught a rebound and made a basket at the buzzer to redeem himself.
Biggest moment: Bryson Grasse’s four-point swing
Ahead 50-48 with just over a minute left, Bryson Grasse came alive for the Crusaders. He sunk two free throws and then recorded a steal and took the ball to the rack for two on the other end. The senior ended with 10 points and brought endless momentum for his group.
Best effort: Jeremiah Zio (Admiral Farragut)
At 6’8″, 225 lbs., it is obvious that Jeremiah Zio is a football player. But the senior big man gave it his all against Webster with four points and some key rebounds. he hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter to flash his range.
Best aggressor: Christian Noskey (Seffner Christian)
I know Christian Noskey only had three points in this game, coming at the end of the second quarter, but his presence was known. The senior made life tough for Admiral Farragut all night long with gritty plays inside. Noskey is a scrappy player.
