Arguably the top two teams in Kentucky’s 12th region faced off for the second time this season, and boy was it a good one. In the two teams’ first meeting, Pulaski pulled off the win against Southwestern, winning 87-72. The outcome was no different on Pulaski’s home court, but Southwestern gave the Maroons everything they wanted and more. After a three by Pulaski County freshman Colton Fraley put the Maroons in the drivers seat, a last second three by Southwestern’s Peyton Gover fell just short from giving the Warriors a win.
Here are the Five Best from the night:
MVP: Steven Fitzgerald, Pulaski County
This was a tough one. Had the win gone Southwestern’s way, Peyton Gover arguably had the performance of the night. But Fitzgerald, ranked as Prep Hoops Kentucky’s #1 player in the class of 2018, led his team to victory with a strong start that helped the Maroons control the first 3 quarters of the game. Fitzgerald scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half alone.
Best Offensive Performance: Peyton Gover, Southwestern
Peyton Gover has done it all year. Averaging just over 30 points per game on the season, Gover put up 31 against the Maroons, even when the game plan seemed to be denying him the ball most of the game. Not only that, the 5’8 senior guard was guarded by the 6’5 Fitzgerald on a number of different possessions. That did not phase Gover, who continued to do it all for Southwestern on this night. Hitting shots, finding open shooters, and controlling the game even when he was the center of the opposing team’s attention. Gover scored 10 of his 31 points in the 3rd quarter alone.
Best Under-the-Radar Performance: Logan Dykes, Southwestern
Dykes scored 10 points on the game, but the significance of 4 those 10 points did not go unnoticed. Dykes hit a baseline jumper under a minute left to go in the game that tied it all up at 79. Before that, another baseline jumper from Dykes put the Warriors within one point under two and a half minutes remaining in the game.
Best Off-the-Bench Performance: Joe Floyd, Southwestern and Colton Fraley Pulaski County
Both freshmen, Floyd only averages 2 points per game and came off the bench to give the Warriors 6 points in the final quarter of play, helping them make their run. Colton Fraley hit the three that gave Pulaski County the lead that would seal the game, contributing 8 points total off the bench.
Best Shooter: Landon Powell, Pulaski County
Powell is averaging 20 points per game on the season and is top five in the state in 3-pt field goal percentage at 50%. Powell contributed a solid 14 points on this night.
Biggest Takeaway:
These two teams are two of the best in the region for a reason. Expect both of them to be in contention once the region tournament comes around. Southwestern’s only two losses have come at the hands of Pulaski County. Southwestern sits at 15-2 on the year, 5-2 in the region. Pulaski County is 14-4 with their record against region teams at 8-1.
