Implications were high, as the winner would acquire a 43rd District and 11th Region win that is ever important for seeding determinations.
From the start, it was evident that both teams knew the importance of this game. Focus, energy, and level of play were at a high level. The stars of each team came out on fire and continued with phenomenal performances.
Western Kentucky signee and Mr. Basketball candidate, Taveion Hollingsworth for Paul Laurence Dunbar, was unguardable. Yes! Those are strong words and simply, the facts. Hollingsworth finished with 40 points on 13-26 shooting including 5-7 from 3 and 9-13 from the free-throw line. Taveion also contributed 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Super-sophomore Kyle Rode who has already visited Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue, Xavier, Tennessee and has received other interest from Virginia Tech, Stanford, and Eastern Kentucky University led Lexington Christian. The 6’7 SF versatility was on display, doing the majority of his damage in the post. Rode finished with 32 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Basketball is of game of runs that held true throughout this contest. Each team led multiple times with the largest lead being 13. Both coaches had to dig deep into their defensive playbook to find ways to slow each teams superstar. Ultimately, it was huge 4th quarter by the Bulldogs. They scored 34 points in the quarter that allowed them to prevail to victory 79-71.
Paul Laurence Dunbar
Tavieon Hollingsworth (6-3, Sr, PG) – The best player on floor and in the state of Kentucky proved, yet again, why. Tavieon’s quick, explosive first step makes him nearly impossible to guard. Added, the capability to change speeds and direction in a heartbeat is frustrating for opposing players. Hollingsworth has no holes in his offensive game. Western Kentucky is getting a superb talent and will have a huge impact in the future success of the Hilltoppers.
Star Ifeacho (6-2, So, G/F) – Intriguing young prospect with good size, strength, and athleticism is one to keep an eye on. Although, Ifeacho did bot have his best game. Ifeacho is averaging 6.2 PPG and 5.0 RPG and I expect those numbers to increase once star Hollingsworth graduates this season. Star brought a lot of energy and solid defense to the game on Friday.
Lexington Christian
Kyle Rode (6-7, So, SF) – High Major D1 prospect with versatility and top level feel for the game. The attribute that sets Rode a part from other recruits is his high basketball IQ. Kyle was dominant in the post using his size and strength to his advantage. Dunbar attempted repeatedly to double him to no avail. Rode made them pay with his court awareness and vision finding the open teammate time and time again. Additionally, he showcased great leadership ability and was a positive voice for his teammates.
Carter Hendricksen (6-7, Jr, PF) – Carter is a big, strong forward averaging 14.3 PPG and 7.9 RPG on the season. He will not impress with athleticism rather with his positioning, footwork, and good hands. Hendrickson is strong finisher around the rim which he did on Friday night. Also, has a nice 3-point shooting touch having made 24 thus far on 33%.
Austin Hall (6-5 Jr, F) – The leading scorer for the talented Lexington Christian Academy at 16.5 PPG and 6.2 RPG is a college prospect. Hall is an efficient scorer shooting 67.3% from the field (including 3pt) and making 18 of 38 threes on the season. Austin plays with good effort and a smart basketball player. Also, runs the floor well.
