Fast forward nearly a year and now he’s generated interest from Louisville, Stanford, Tulane and Texas Rio Grande Valley as well.
Moving to America from Sudan in 2014, Akec has been with Victory Rock Prep since freshman year. He’s been playing basketball since the age of 11, but wasn’t a part of a team until two years after that.
Splitting time between JV and varsity last season, Akec has been a huge bright spot for the Blue Devils. He’s averaging 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a junior. Akec had this to say about this season.
“This season has been good so far,” he said. “It’s not how we wanted to start it off we lost two to three games that we should of won.”
He scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 68-62 loss to Huntington Prep (W.Va.) last weekend at the ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest. Akec connected on 2-of-3 of his 3-pointers and was very active all night.
He has big goals of becoming a better leader and facilitator and of becoming one of the top players in the country.
One thing is for certain about Akec, his energy is through the roof. He’s always flying up and down the court. During the pregame warmups, I noticed him dancing and smiling to the music being played while shooting around.
“My mindset going into games is to play hard on defense and also staying in attack mode during the whole game,” Akec said. “I need to work on my defense and handles also getting to my spots.”
Akec has noticed his shooting, ability to come of ball screens and passing improve this season.
The sky is the limit for Akec at Victory Rock. This program guides players in the right direction and he’s one of many pure athletes growing into his role and gaining confidence. By this team next year expect Akec to be a hot commodity in the class of 2018.
