The Berkeley Prep starter is flourishing as the team’s leading scorer (13.9 PPG) and is fresh off a football season where he caught five touchdowns and recorded four interceptions lining up as both a wide receiver and safety.
Mathis stands at 6’5″, 188 lbs. and over his last four games, he’s been on fire. He has two 21 point performances, a 14-point outing and a 13-point game as the Buccaneers have gone 2-2.
Berkeley Prep is currently 13-8 and 5-4 in Class 5A-District 9 play. Mathis says the season is going well for him and his team.
“We want to make it out of districts, that’s the goal of ours,” he said.
He says he’s looking to improve more off the dribble. Mathis is better at finishing at the rim, he says.
Currently, he has drawn interest from Jacksonville for basketball. For football, Miami, North Carolina and UF are showing strong interest.
Mathis says he thinks he can help schools for either sport because he’s long and athletic.
On the court, his work looks almost effortless. He weaves his way inside and can knock down open jumpers. Mathis is really good with the ball in his hands and leading the Bucs in transition. It looks like he’ll get a better chance to play for a big-time football program, but for now he’s making his presence known in basketball this season.
