In his first season with the Indians, the 6’3″, 180-pound sophomore is averaging 14.1 points per game. After transferring over from Cardinal Mooney, Whelton has helped Venice stay competitive in a tough Class 8A-District 11 with a 10-7 record.
Here is what Whelton is focused on this season.
“I’ve been working on becoming more diverse as a scorer, I’ve always been able to shoot since I’ve been little but I wanted to work on getting to the rim or creating for others when I drive,” he said.
His dad Joe played basketball in the mid 70’s for Connecticut. Matteo leans on him for colleges and his future at the next level.
Whelton says he’s been in contact with some Ivy League and Patriot League and one mid-major school as of late.
He sees himself fitting in at the next level like this.
“I think i fit in as a point guard who creates for others and sets up the offense and gets other’s going and scores when he has to,” he said. “Being another coach or voice on the court and getting people organized.”
No offers have come yet, but here is the list of Whelton’s interest: Holy Cross, Brown, Princeton, Davidson, Virginia, Valdosta State, New Haven and Campbell.
Whelton has two 20 point performances this season and he’s only scored less than 10 points in three games. He’s a consistent threat and at Venice there’s a chance for him to be the top guy for the long haul. This kid is very smart.
