I saw the 6’2″, 165-pound Dr. Phillips junior do everything in his power to help the Panthers come up with a 59-55 over Wharton on Saturday at Clearwater High. He scored a team-best 18 points in the victory which included three 3-pointers in the first half alone. Love also had six rebounds and three assists.
Dr. Phillips sits at 12-4 and in Class 9A-5, only Oak Ridge has a better district record (4-0) than the Panthers (4-1). Love is happy about how the year has gone so far for his group.
“We have a pretty good chance of accomplishing all of our team goals and achieving 20 wins. Our team is finally starting to come together after the football players have come back,” he said. “We are starting to build our team chemistry and preparing to make a deep run in playoffs.”
Love’s 32-point performance against West Orange proved how lethal he can be all over the court.
He says he wants to continue to improve his game and become a three level scorer, someone who can get to the rim, shoot the mid-range and make 3’s.
“My mindset is a key for my success, my mindset is all around confidence and attitude on the court and saying to myself that nobody can guard me and that I will always do what it takes to win,” Love said. “I don’t want to be only labeled as a shooter. I want to be able to do and score whenever throughout a game.”
Love says his confidence and ability to score has improved. That started back in the summer in AAU ball with the Showtime Ballers.
Somehow Love has no offers or interest yet. That will certainly change here quickly. Playing in 9A in a big market it is hard to go unnoticed. Love has a nice mix of size, speed and smarts. This kid deserves attention right now.
