At 6’5″, the Countryside freshman is packed with length. Back on Nov. 26, he added 15 points against Treasure Coast in a win at the Turkey Shootout at Lehigh. Shaneyfelt flashed his outside shot, by knocking down three 3’s and I took notice.
Last week, I watched Shaneyfelt play three times at the Nature Coast Christmas Tournament. The Cougars fell to eventual Bracket B champion Fletcher in the final on Friday night, but Countryside didn’t go down without a fight.
Shaneyfelt had only two points in the tournament opener against Roswell before dropping a career-best 21 points the following night. He had 11 points against Fletcher in the final.
Countryside is a serious contender Class 8A-District 10 as they’ll compete with St. Petersburg, East Lake, Seminole, Palm Harbor University and Pinellas Park. Those matchups aren’t easy, but at 8-5, Shaneyfelt called his season great so far.
“We’ve had some good wins against ranked teams including St. Pete,” he said. “In the Nature Coast Tournament, we played very well all around but we just couldn’t rebound in the championship game.”
Here’s how Shaneyfelt broke down his own game.
“I’m an exceptional shooter from three. I can drive to the basket and finish and I have good passing abilities,” he said. “I like to pass first when I drive and I’m always looking for the open man.”
He’s looking to get better at his mid-range game and finishing strong at the rim.
Shaneyfelt will play for coach Rick Thorpe and SEBA this upcoming summer on the AAU circuit.
He said he has spoken with several college coaches informally this season. Shaneyfelt is going to be a very good talent. I think with his ability to attack and make outside shots often, he’ll thrive at the next level.
With so much time left in high school for Shaneyfelt, the sky is the limit for him. I think as he grows in height and adds muscle, more coaches and scouts will come calling for his services. Shaneyfelt is one of the best 2020 prospects in the entire state.
Here’s one of his many put backs from the Nature Coast Tournament last week.
