Spartans senior Tyrese Hurst led the way for his group with 26 points as Lakewood improved to 14-5. Gibbs earned a 23-point performance for the Gladiators (15-6).

MVP: Tyrese Hurst (Lakewood)
Tyrese Hurst scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first half as Lakewood took full advantage on the offensive end. The senior made it look easy connecting on three 3-pointers in the first quarter alone. Hurst is a pure athlete who is also a cornerback/wide receiver for the Spartans football team. Hurst was clutch tonight.
Best offensive performance: David Pierce (Gibbs)
Junior guard David Pierce is a very good player. He proved that time and time again in this game. With just four points at the break, Pierce exploded for 19 points in the second half including 12 points in the fourth quarter, three 3-pointers. He hit a clutch one that cut the deficit to four ().
Best defensive performance: Jalen White (Lakewood)
Jalen White is a true talent as a sophomore. He scored 14 points for Lakewood and paced his offense all night while bringing the ball up. White crashed the boards plenty in this one and his energy was undeniable.
Best intangibles: Tre Gilliam (Gibbs)
The freshman sensation has been rock solid for the Gladiators this season. Tre Gilliam didn’t score in the first half, but added 14 points over the final 16 minutes. He scored six points in the final quarter including a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Gilliam was the next best thing besides Pierce.
Best under-the-radar performance: Mataeo Brinson (Lakewood)
Mataeo Brinson added 14 points which included six in the second half. The junior did all he could from inside and out for the Spartans. Brinson is a player who finds himself into good areas on the court often.
Best catch and shoot guy: David Pierce (Gibbs)
Pierce had five 3-pointers in the second half. He was deadly from outside and when he drove down the court in transition or found a crease, he made Lakewood pay. Pierce is a good attacker and a guy who can get the ball quick and knock down a jumper.
Best underclassman: Bryce Brown (Lakewood)
Lakewood freshman Bryce Brown didn’t have a point in this game, but he’s fun to watch. He was trusted to have the ball in his hands and dish it out. On a rebound, he fought with 6’6″ Gibbs forward Bailey Peterson for it and the end result was a jump ball.
Best attacker: Tyrese Hurst (Lakewood)
Hurst was the best attacker in this game and for Lakewood he drove time and time again. His performance was fun to watch.
Best energy: Bailey Peterson (Gibbs)
Bailey Peterson had eight points for the Gladiators. In the first half, he made his shots count with six points. However, even when he didn’t connect, Peterson was able to grab key rebounds and keep possessions going for his group.
Best athlete: Kristoff Scarborough (Lakewood)
A senior forward, Kristoff Scarborough recorded six points for the Spartans. He had a powerful dunk in the fourth quarter. Scarborough made things interesting when he came off the bench. Lakewood certainly likes having him at its dispense.
