Christian Shaneyfelt led the way for the Cougars (16-5) while Marquez Cooper had 17 for the Sharks (13-9)
Here are the 10 best performers from this matchup.
MVP: Christian Shaneyfelt (Countryside)
One of the top freshmen in the Tampa area is Christian Shaneyfelt. The 2020 forward can flat out shoot the ball. After not scoring a single point in the opening quarter, he went off for 13 of his team’s 17 points in the second quarter. He hit his second 3-pointer of the night in the third quarter and another layup to finish with a game-high 18. Shaneyfelt is getting better with each game.
Best offensive performance: Marquez Cooper (Anclote)
Marquez Cooper made some tough shots for the Sharks. The senior guard recorded 12 of his team’s 16 second quarter points. He had a two-handed slam in transition, made a couple of really nice jumpers and drew the Cougars attention plenty. Cooper had 17.
Best defensive performance: Tyler Witz (Countryside)
Tyler Witz is the biggest guy on the floor most nights. Even in his first varsity year, the senior center is a nice presence for the Cougars. He made life awfully tough for Anclote inside. With more time in the gym, Witz has a chance to be a really good player.
Best intangibles: C.J. Williams (Countryside)
Junior point guard C.J. Williams is one of the most unselfish players around. I’ve seen him drop 20 plus points, score less than 10 points. Every time, though he impresses me with his knowledge and overall smarts. He had all four of his points in the third quarter, which included a tough layup through two defenders (.
Best under-the-radar performance: Jacobie Forrest (Anclote)
Jacobie Forrest scored all eight of his points after the opening quarter. The freshman guard doesn’t wow you, but even at 5’11”, 145 lbs., he’s able to do enough. He paced Cooper and late in the game, Forrest was really the only guy making plays for the Sharks.
Best catch and shoot guy: Christian Shaneyfelt (Countryside)
Shaneyfelt can make shots all over the floor, but he looks most comfortable when he stops and pops. He did that often for the Cougars in this game and it helped build a lead.
Best underclassman: Jakob Hester (Anclote)
At 6’6″, 185 lbs., Jakob Hester has a nice mix of length and agility. The freshman had six points for Anclote despite the blowout. Hester is a player who has a chance to be very solid with more training and focus.
Best attacker: Tyler Witz (Countryside)
Witz is a big guy at 6’10” and used every bit of his frame to his full advantage. Attacking was his specialty especially when his guards dished him the ball down low.
Best energy: Reynaldo Gonzalez (Anclote)
After Cooper and Forrest, Reynaldo Gonzalez was the next best thing for the Sharks. It wasn’t a pretty showing for Anclote, but Gonzalez was able to bring his talent to the table. The 6’1″ junior forward scored six points.
Best athlete: Troy Reeves (Countryside)
Troy Reeves is a crafty ballhandler. The 5’10” junior guard finished with six points in this game. Reeves had a couple of really nice passes and his speed really helped the offensive sets for the Cougars.
