The Terrapins (12-1) were led by Jaren Phillips and his 18 points while Amari Goulbourne added 10. For Bishop McLaughlin, Drew James finished with a team-high 14 points.
MVP: Jaren Phillips (Tampa Prep)
The 6’5″ sophomore is a big kid who appeared in just his eighth game of the season. After recording 31 points against Mitchell on Friday, Phillips had 18 points and six rebounds tonight. Phillips is someone who really shines when attacking, but he can make a shot from outside often. He’s the top dog on this Tampa Prep team.
Best offensive performance: Drew James (Bishop McLaughlin)
Drew James seems to always make plays for the Hurricanes. He had 14 points in this game and did everything he could to keep Bishop McLaughlin alive. James was held to five points in the second half, but he was all over the floor for his team.
Best defensive performance: Charles Scriven (Tampa Prep)
Senior forward Charles Scriven is off to a nice start to the season. In this one, he only had two points, but he contributed plenty on defense with six blocks and four rebounds. Scriven is someone that Tampa Prep will count on time and time again down low.
Best attacker: Amari Goulbourne (Tampa Prep)
One of three seniors on the roster, guard Amari Goulbourne had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Goulbourne is quick with the ball in or out of his hands. He attacked often in the second half for Tampa Prep as it took command of the game and that really helped the tempo.
Best intangibles: Jared Walker (Tampa Prep)
Sophomore Jared Walker serves a big man role off the bench. He scored six points in this game, but it was contributions on the board that helped his team. Walker recorded four rebounds and two steals. Look for him to continue to play key minutes.
Best under-the-radar performance: Gabriel Sharp (Tampa Prep)
Gabriel Sharp is another young player who has stepped up in the early going in a rotational role for Tampa Prep. He had eight points and two rebounds in this game including six points in the second half. Sharp has a bright basketball IQ.
Best catch and shoot guy: Gilbert Estien (Bishop McLaughlin)
Senior guard Gilbert Estien scored eight points for the Hurricanes. All of his points came in the second half as he knocked down outside shots. He hit a 3-pointer late in the third quarter and was fouled on a triple in the final quarter.
Best underclassmen: Isaac Ward (Tampa Prep)
Just a freshman, guard Isaac Ward is a reliable starter for the Terrapins. He had four points, three assists and two rebounds in this game. Ward rarely makes a mistake as a passer and he keeps the offense in check for the most part.
Best energy: Shafer Magee (Bishop McLaughlin)
Sophomore forward Shafer Magee plays much bigger than his 5’11” frame. He had no points for the Hurricances, but he came up with six rebounds and showed up defensively. Magee buckled down when he needed to and it helped Bishop McLaughlin hang around late.
Best athlete: Amari Goulbourne (Tampa Prep)
Goulbourne used his blazing wheels to get up the court in a hurry throughout the night. He attacked on those plays and found open space when he could. Goulbourne is a sneaky good athlete.
Note: Trey Sibert left the game with a left ankle injury in the first quarter and didn’t return.
