Gaines is a shooting guard, a scorer who plays with a high basketball IQ. Having the ability to go inside and out (standing 6’5), he looks to take advantage of mismatches on the floor, looking to post up smaller guards around the basket. If he has a big man on him, he likes bringing him out away from the rim and beating him off the dribble. The wing plays with a lot of energy that is contagious to his teammates.
Last season saw Gaines average 11.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds. Four games into the young 2016-2017 season, Gaines is averaging 16 points per game, shooting 54% from the field and continuing right where he left off with rebounds per game.
2016-2017 Early Season Showing
“The season has started off fairly well. It’s early in the year and we have a new coach, a lot of young guys seeing action early – which is good for them but we’ll need them to step up early,” Gaines said about his teams start. “As a team I think everyone has done a solid job of everyone controlling what they can control and playing within themselves and accepting their role on the team. Personally, I’m just trying to help my team in any way possible.”
Senior Year Expectations
When asked about his expectation going into his senior season – “my expectation is to try to get the #1 seeding in our district and getting back to the regional tournament (for a three peat). That will be no easy task, but it would be great to earn another appearance at Rupp Arena for the state tournament. I would love for my senior season to end at Rupp.”
Another goal of his is to become a member of the 1,000 point club and that he give his team all he has for them to be successful.
College Interests
Gaines has two offers as of now. Those offers are from Division III Transylvania and NAIA powerhouse Pikeville. He’s recieved interest from Campbellsville University, Rend Lake CC, and Samford University.
When looking for a place to play at the next level, Dylan said he is looking for the best fit for him. “I’ll look at the coaches, players, their style of play, and how it’s a good fit for me. I feel like wherever I go I can come in contribute right away and take care of business on and off the court.”
In the Classroom
Knowing there is no basketball without good grades, Dylan shows a lot of pride in his academics. His weighted GPA stands at a 3.6.
