The St. Pete Green Devils are 3-0 to open the new year after going 27-7 and appearing in the Class 8A state final. The year prior, Smith and company advance to the state semifinal.
On Monday night, Smith led the charge for St. Pete from the first possession in a 84-59 win over district rival Palm Harbor.
Smith could have easily dropped 40 if this game was closer early on. The junior guard scored 10 points in four minutes of the opening quarter.
The 6’3″, 155-pounder had 18 points after the first quarter and 20 at the half. Finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a steal there wasn’t much Smith couldn’t do on Monday. Both Richmond and South Alabama were present to watch him and Darius Banks play.
When we last talked to Smith it came during AAU season this summer. He wrapped up his third season with Tony Atkins and E1T1. I saw Smith play in the preseason and perform at a high level alongside Banks, AJ Ford and the rest of the Green Devils.
Smith talked about his level of confidence in his game right now.
“My comfort level is pretty much the same from the travel season to my high school team,” he told Prep Hoops Florida. “Both of my coaches give the green light as long as you play hard and defend.”
This team is built for a deep run with athletes all over the place.
Currently, Smith holds three offers from FGCU, James Madison and Wyoming. He also has drawn interest from Murray State, Stetson, South Alabama, UCF, USF, UTSA and Georgia Southern.
Just a reminder that South Alabama was there on Monday night to watch Smith and Banks. Richmond as well. The two coaches talked to Smith and Banks after the game.
As long as Smith continues to contribute as a defender and top-end passer, he’ll continue to get more looks. The scoring will always be there with a good matchup, but doing all the other things is key for his collegiate status.
Smith is in the process of adding muscle and that should help him plenty on the court. He’s a Division-I prospect who is packed with potential.
