After starting at point guard at First Baptist last season where he says he “got his teammates involved and ran the show”, Chlebek is now thriving at Golden Gate.
“This year at Golden Gate I mostly play off the ball,” Chlebek told Prep Hoops Florida. “I’m able to get a lot more open looks with our other guards driving and kicking. This year my role is to hit shots and be a leader, even though I’m new to Golden Gate.”
Chlebek may be viewed as undersized to many at 5’9″, 145 lbs., but his burst down the court on both ends is evident. He currently ranks third on the Titans in scoring with 10.9 points per game behind seniors Orrington Hamilton and James Harris.
In seven games this season, Chlebek has reached the double-digit mark five times including a 15-point outing in a season-opening loss to Mariner and a 16-point performance against Lely on Tuesday night.
Here’s how he would break down his own game.
“I feel as if I’m one of the better shooters in the state,” he said. “I’m underrated so no one has really heard of me. I’m a high IQ guard who can shoot it from deep. I’m looking to work on my ball handling and explosiveness.”
Last summer, Chlebek played travel ball with Team Speights and Hardwood Hoops. He wrapped up the summer session on Hardwood Hoops playing for Guy Hensley, an assistant on the Golden Gate staff.
“We ended the year winning two championships in Greensboro, North Carolina finishing 9-0,” Chlebek said. “I have played with coach Hensley for a few years now. This summer, I had my best summer as far as getting better. Coach Hensley does a great job getting us ready in the weight room and on the court even mentally with our confidence. I improved my all-around game this summer.”
No offers have come just yet for Chlebek, but he says he’s drawn interest from Air Force, Western Carolina, Roanoke, Wesley, Newberry, Catawba, Oglethorpe, St Mary’s College, Bridgton Prep and South Kent Prep.
Just like he said above, as an underrated and reliable player, Chlebek is not known by many people outside the Collier County area. However, this kid is useful in so many situations and at Golden Gate, he’s playing complete basketball. Don’t forget the name Ryan Chlebek, someone will give him a look here soon.
