It was after his grassroots team, Ohio Unity, won a tournament in Florida, when Pedelty says his recruitment really began to spike.
And there’s one particular West Virginia D2 program that has a nice inside track on the junior guard.
“Davis & Elkins was one of the schools showing a lot of interest right now, and after we won a championship in Florida I saw a lot of increase in letters and emails from a lot of coaches. And I think Davis and Elkins is showing the greatest interest in me — they’re always keeping up with me, which I like.”
There’s been three others programs which have reached out to Pedelty in some form.
“I’ve heard from Malone, I talk a little bit with Cedarville, and Wittenberg a little bit too,” he said.
Still with his 17U season ahead of him to showcase himself, Pedelty says that his focus right now is improving, especially defensively.
“I’m really looking forward to playing college, but right now I need to focus on high school. And when AAU comes I’ll just need to do what I can do to help get us wins there,” said Pedelty. “And mostly what I need to work on is stepping up defensively.”
He defines himself as a slashing guard, but also mentioned he’s capable of stepping out and hitting a jumper.
“Usually what I’ll start off doing is I’ll drive to the hole and try and get hot that way, and if that’s not going I’ll shoot a little mid-range,” he said. “I usually don’t start shooting 3s until later in the game, but once I get a hot hand I’ll basically shoot from anywhere.”
“I’d say I’m more of a slasher than a shooter right now. Last year I was more of a shooter, but now I’m more of a slasher.”
What he’s working to improve most right now is his defense and rebounding, he says that’s what will help him get a scholarship.
“Personally I think I need to get better at defense and crashing the boards. I’m 6’4 but I don’t get a lot of rebounds and that needs to change a lot,” he said. “Especially at the college level they look at defense and rebounding — it’s not all about scoring, and I think I need to shift my game a little bit to defense and rebounding.”
Last season he led the JV squad, and then was coming off the bench as the varsity’s sixth-man earlier this season.
But Pedelty made his first varsity start of the season earlier this week against Wilmington.
“I’m going to be looked at to score more and give more minutes,” he said. “More points and defensive stops.”
