Even though the Tritons (7-2) went 1-2 at the City of Palms Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla. this week, Kostyk enjoyed some real success.
The 6’1″, 170-pound senior won the 3-point shootout over Lehigh’s Jon Silva. In one of the best tournaments in the country, it came down to two locals in Kostyk and Silva and Kostyk prevailed. His twin brother Sean also participated in the contest and showed off his talent in games.
Kostyk scored 19 points in a win over Pace on Wednesday. He enjoyed his time at the tournament.
“My experience at the City of Palms was a great one because we got to play on a big stage against some highly talented teams and players,” Kostyk said.
Last season, Mariner went 25-4 and made it to the Class 5A region final before losing 41-38 to Jesuit. Now, in 6A, Kostyk’s role with the team has expanded.
“This past season was a great one with a great team just came up short,” he said. “My role this season at Mariner is to make open 3’s, attack the basket when needed and play hard defense and get stops.”
Here’s how Kostyk breaks down his own game.
“I’m a good shooter, a decent ball handler who attacks open gaps,” Kostyk said. “I play hard defense, take charges and am a good team player. I get better at ball handling and attacking the basket.”
No offers have come Kostyk’s way, but playing alongside 6’8″ senior forward Amari Haynes and 6’6″ junior forward Jahmel Myers certainly helps his game.
At the very least, Kostyk should get a chance at a Division-III or NAIA program. He’s a lethal shooter who can serve as a 3-point specialist and give it his all on defense.
