“I am a pass-first player,” Back said. “My go-to shot is definitely behind the three-point line – I hit seven threes in our season opener this past Saturday against Buckhorn. If I have a slower man or bigger man on me, I am able to go around him and get a good shot for my teammates or get a good shot for myself. I have worked on my defense and jumping and I have improved greatly on both of those.
“I also can drop down and help rebound. On the defensive end I crash the boards and look to push it up the floor to get an easy basket. I can also read passes good; if we are running a trapping defense I can rotate around and pick off passes or at least deflect the passes out of bounds.”
Back says he and his team have gotten off to a good start on the season.
“We are now 1-0,” Back stated. “Our next game is at Clay County. I started out the season with 23 points. I hit seven threes and a pull-up jumpshot on a fast break. I had six assists and a few steals and rebounds. Our team is young, so we have to get used to playing together because only two of us are starting as the only ones that started last year. We can push the floor and get the tempo on our side. We are really good at keeping the game at a pace we want.”
In the classroom at the high school, Back says he is a hard worker.
“I am a school-first student,” Back noted. “I haven’t made lower than an A in high school. I have a 4.0 GPA. I recently took the ACT for the first time and scored a 23. Before I talk or anything I will finish my work and make sure I know what I am doing.”
Although he hasn’t received his first direct offer yet, Back says he has been shown interest from multiple schools in Kansas, Cincinnati, Asbury and Maryville College and says that more coaches and programs should start to reach out because he is an all-around athlete.
“I am an all around player,” Back added. “I don’t just shoot, or pass, or just defend – I can do it all. I can knock down shots when I need to. I can guard whoever they put me on. I can get the ball to the open man and I will make the extra pass to get my teammate a great shot. I am not the selfish type and I hate when teams don’t play team ball. I will always work hard and will never give up on anything. I have never been the type to lose or quit at anything.”
