As a freshman a year ago, the 6’0″ guard averaged 6.4 points per game. With juniors Andrew Cunningham and Richard Gouraige choosing to focus on football solely, Watkins found himself an opening in the lineup.
Add in the fact that Caleb Young and Zach Froelich, two dual-sport athletes as well, are both injured.
Watkins had 21 points including 14 in the first half of Thursday night’s 96-69 win over Bayshore Christian. His first three made baskets were 3’s in the opening quarter as he ended the night with four 3’s.
He’s a crafty player on the offensive end. He’s still maturing on defense, but for now, Watkins is making things happen for the Lancers. He has no offers or interest just yet.
Under first-year head coach Teddy Dupay, a former high school standout at Mariner and a UF alum, Watkins is going to learn a ton this season. If he can take it all in and develop that is the question. So far so good for the sophomore’s progress.
