The Brooks DeBartolo senior flew under the radar in Thursday night’s district loss to Berkeley Prep. Gilliard quietly added eight points which included a coast to coast lay-in against two Buccaneers defenders at the end of the first quarter.
You can see how his skills as a defensive back translate to shooting guard. At 6’2″, he’s lengthy and is packed with athleticism.
Along with senior Craig Hall and junior DeShawn Todman, Gilliard is someone the Phoenix can rely on.
He says he plays every game like it is his last.
“You never know when it’s all over,” Gilliard told Prep Hoops Florida. “So I have to play 110% every play and that’s what I did last night. My dad always told me there is no substitute for effort.”
Three schools are showing interest in Gilliard for his skills as a defensive back on the football field: SC State, Morgan State and FAMU.
I think college programs need to start seriously considering his abilities on the basketball court. We’ve seen many players flourish in both sports. When you watch Gilliard, you see someone filled with so much endless potential and his instincts are through the roof. Don’t be shocked if he earns some looks for basketball on top of his football interest.
