The game featured 14 lead changes and 6 ties, with the biggest lead being 7. In the end, Lexington Catholic Knights prevailed to victory 59-55.
MVP: Zan Payne (2018) Lexington Catholic. The 6’6 forward was a beast on the boards! Finishing with a game high 17. Payne attacked the glass with relentless effort and refused to accept a box out. However, Payne didn’t stop there. He totaled 13 pts, with a collection of mid range jump shots, drives to the rim, and post up opportunities. Payne also displayed great footwork throughout the night.
Best Offensive Performance: Luke Johnson (2017) Lexington Catholic. The senior tallied a game high 23 points. Johnson slashed the lane continuously throughout the night. The Knights of Lexington Catholic offensive philosophy of Dribble Drive Motion played to the strengths of Johnson. He finished with an excellent floater. Johnson kept the defense off balance by burying 2 three’s on the night as well.
Best Defensive Performance: Michael Moreno (2019) Scott County. Moreno who is the #2 ranked prospect in the class of 2019 in the state. Michael patrolled the paint on defense side of the ball with 5 blocked shots. Moreno used his strength and athleticism to alter numerous shot attempts as well. Michael was a monster on the glass, totaling 14 boards.
Play of the Game: Zan Payne (2018) Lexington Catholic. Late in the 4th quarter with his team up by one point, Payne received a pass from his teammate on the right wing. Upon receipt of the pass, Payne powerfully jab stepped his defender to the left and attacked the rim with a hard right hand. On a dime, pulled up for a jump shot that swished and put his team up by 3 points with less than a minute to play. Ultimately, the deciding possesion in the game.
Best Role Player: TC Price (2018) Lexington Catholic. Price was a steady piece in the Lexington Catholic victory. TC ran the show as the PG for the Knights, played tough defense and contributed 9 points.
Best Intangibles: Cooper Robb (2018) Scott Co. Robb was the floor general for the Cardinals of Scott Co. Ensuring teammates were properly aligned on offense and defense throughout. Robb is also a gritty competitor that provided excellent on the ball pressure to the opposing team PG.
Best Under-the-Radar Performance: Peter Whitman (2017) Lexington Catholic. Whitman a 6’6, center for the Knights finished with 8pts and 9 rebounds helping his team to a win. He played hard and came up with tough, in traffic rebounds to help secure the victory late. Peter was a perfect 4/4 from the free throw, which were valuable points in a close contest.
Best Underclassmen: Michael Moreno (2019) Scott County. Moreno, a legitimate D1 prospect showed why college coaches are wanting him on their campus with a gigantic performance. Moreno finished with 18pts, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 blocked shots. The 6’6 small forward showed versatility on the offensive end scoring off of post ups, rim attacks, pull-ups, and 3 point shooting. Top assistant from Eastern Kentucky University was on hand to watch.
Best Shooter: Bryce Long (2019) Scott Co. Finished the game with two made three’s due to stellar defensive effort and hard close outs by Catholic. However, Long displayed excellent shooting mechanics, balance and confidence.
Best Passer: Michael Moreno (2019) Scott Co. Moreno delivered precise outlet passes to teammates that led to easy baskets on multiple occasions. His ability mirrored Cleveland Cavalier Kevin Love. He also showed excellent court vision and decision making against Lex Cath’s stellar 2-2-1 press.
