MVP: Zachary Carter (Hillsborough)
The University of Florida commit holds over 40 offers for football. On Wednesday night, Zachary Carter earned another offer from Oregon with USF coach Willie Taggart making the move there. He battles on the basketball court. In this game, he finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Carter is very strong and isn’t afraid to mix it up down low.
Best offensive performance: Justin Smith (Middleton)
Justin Smith is a junior starter for Middleton. He hung with Carter for much of the night on offense and defense. Smith recorded 17 points and showed off his post skills and handles. He led the charge for the Tigers throughout this one and flashed a ton of grittiness.
Best defensive performance: Zachary Carter (Hillsborough)
It is harder to find a better defender from this game than Carter. He grabbed 10 rebounds like mentioned previously, but he kept the Tigers out of the paint and protected the home court advantage. Carter is a defender you don’t want to go up against simply because he’s that intimidating.
Best guy off the bench: Tim Lawerence (Hillsborough)
Senior guard Tim Lawerence did all the little things on Wednesday night. Finishing with six points and five steals, you saw just a glimpse of the effect he brings to this team. Lawerence is a sneaky good player off the bench for the Terriers. Expect performances like this all season long.
Best intangibles: Dexter Stallworth (Hillsborough)
Hillsborough is fortunate to have a crafty player run the offense in senior guard Dexter Stallworth. The point guard had 11 points and three assists against Middleton. Stallworth is someone I’ve been impressed by often and he continues to make smart decisions. He’s a high-end passer and his long range jumper has improved.
Best under-the-radar performance: Bryce Moragne (Hillsborough)
Senior forward Bryce Moragne plays with a chip on his shoulder. In this game, he had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. He looks the part more often than not on both sides of the floor. Moragne is a key piece to the Terriers attack.
Best underclassmen: Tyler Thomas (Hillsborough)
The Terriers quarterback on the football field, Tyler Thomas is smooth on the basketball court. Only a sophomore, Thomas had four points in this game on two very sweet passes from Dexter Stallworth. Thomas is a pure athlete and that is noticeable every time he gets the ball in his hands.
Best catch and shoot guy: Kenny Cruz (Middleton)
Although he had only two points in the second half, Kenny Cruz kept Middleton in this game. The senior guard had eight points and hit a couple of key jumpers in the second quarter as the Tigers trailed 24-22 at the break. Cruz is a leader on this team.
Best energy guy: Rashard Williams (Middleton)
Senior guard Rashard Williams gave the Tigers very strong minutes in this game. He finished with eight points, all coming in the second half. Williams didn’t give up on plays often. He chased down his own missed shots and fought for every free ball.
