MVP: Jaylin Jackson (Cambridge Christian)
The starting quarterback for the Lancers football team, Jaylin Jackson has serious speed and athleticism. He added a game-high 26 points in this game. In the first half alone, the junior guard had 15 points. Jackson finished with six 3’s and really showed off his confidence as a jump shooter all night long. As he gets back into the swing of basketball, he’ll continue to improve.
Best offensive performance: Michael Watkins (Cambridge Christian)
Michael Watkins gave Cambridge solid minutes at the two-guard spot. The sophomore finished with 21 points including 14 in the first half. His first three made baskets were 3’s in the opening quarter as he ended the night with four 3’s. Watkins is a crafty player on the offensive end. He’s still maturing on defense, but for now he’s making things happen for the Lancers.
Best defensive performance: Tripp Burdgess (Cambridge Christian)
The biggest guy on the court was also the youngest. 8th grader Tripp Burdgess, a 6’7″ center looks more like a football player. However, he is the starting big man for Cambridge. He grabbed rebounds time and time again and made life tough for the smaller Bayshore bunch. His offensive game is limited as he had only two points, but he is a big defender in the paint.
Best guy off the bench: Lavondre Carter (Cambridge Christian)
2020 forward Lavondre Carter paced Jackson and Watkins with 11 points of his own. The freshman plays smart basketball and made his presence known off the bench. This is a kid to monitor as the season progresses alongside a very athletic Cambridge group.
Best intangibles: Darryl Mercer (Cambridge Christian)
An athlete for the Lancers football team, playing both wide receiver and quarterback, Darryl Mercer showed off his abilities as a guard. The junior had 13 points in this one and found himself running in transition more often than not. He’s a crafty and chippy player on both ends of the floor.
Best under-the-radar performance: Zavian Campbell (Cambridge Christian)
The sophomore forward ended up with 21 points in this one. After having seven points at the break, Campbell really dug deep especially in the fourth quarter when he posted a team-best 10 points. He has a good sense of awareness around the paint and his ability to attack is evident. Once Campbell becomes more polished, he’ll be even better.
Best underclassmen: Jeremiah Wicks (Bayshore Christian)
Only a freshman, Bayshore Christian guard Jeremiah Wicks quietly had eight points on the night. He isn’t a strong attacker, but he’s quick and gets around defenders often. Wicks is someone Bayshore will continue to develop and put in good situations.
Best catch and shoot guy: Jaylin Jackson (Cambridge Christian)
Jackson and Watkins combined for 10 triples in this game. Jackson buried six of his own and proved to be the best catch and shoot guy on the team. Watkins flashed plenty of that, but it was Jackson who kept the offensive attack flowing throughout.
Best energy guy: Christian Anderson (Bayshore Christian)
15 of Chase Anderson’s 19 points came in the second half. The senior forward fought all night long for the Faith Warriors despite the large deficit. Along with Kitt, Anderson is a guy to lean on for Bayshore.
