Freshman Christian Shaneyfelt finished with a team-best 21 points for the Cougars (8-4) while Ky’Llen Hymon had 19 for Armwood (4-7).
MVP: Christian Shaneyfelt (Countryside)
Christian Shaneyfelt recorded his first 20 point game of his high school career with 21 points. The freshman added 17 points in the second half alone after getting off to a slow start. His confidence grew as the game went on and the 6’5″ forward is a true talent in his first varsity season.
Best offensive performance: Ky’Llen Hymon (Armwood)
Junior guard Ky’Llen Hymon fired up shot after shot and rarely missed. Finishing with a team-best 19 points, Hymon is a superb outside shooter. Look for him to be the top scorer more often than not for the Hawks.
Best defensive performance: Tyler Witz (Countryside)
6’8″ center Tyler Witz is the top big man at Countryside. His offensive game has expanded and that was proven by his 17 points in this game including 15 in the first half. On defense, Witz is someone the Cougars can really count on.
Best guy off the bench: Shaahid Newsone (Armwood)
Junior guard Shaahid Newsone quietly had 10 points including Armwood’s final four points in the game. He came off the bench the last two games and brought a lot to the table for the Hawks.
Best intangibles: Chris Jones (Armwood)
Chris Jones flashed his scoring ability with a 15-point performance. The senior guard had 11 points in the first quarter alone. Jones is a very solid option for Armwood and he has looked good all week long at the tournament.
Best under-the-radar performance: Nate Tettenborn (Countryside)
Junior guard Nate Tettenborn added 12 points on the night including six of the team’s first eight in the opening quarter. The 6’3″ 2018 prospect is someone who holds the fort down for the Cougars. He is a leader.
Best catch and shoot guy: Ky’Llen Hymon (Armwood)
Hymon connected on six 3’s in this game and picked up where he left off against Friendship (D.C.) from Wednesday night. The junior guard is a pure shooter and someone that will carry the load more often than not for the Hawks this season.
Best underclassmen: Ezeriah Anderson (Armwood)
Only a sophomore, Ezeriah Anderson has very good size at 6’6″ and as his role increases with the Hawks, so will his confidence. Shamori King left the game briefly with tension brewing, so Anderson came off the bench. I think this kid can be a very solid player once he develops a consistent jump shot. He had two points in this game.
Best energy: C.J. Williams (Countryside)
Junior guard C.J. Williams had five points for Countryside. He went in and out the game as the Cougars used a deep rotation, but when the 6’3″ 2018 prospect came in the game, both sides of the ball improved.
Best athlete: Christian Shaneyfelt (Countryside)
Most of the freshman’s points came in the second half with the game on the line. Time and time again, Christian Shaneyfelt attacked at will and put the Cougars on his back with Witz battling foul trouble. Shaneyfelt is up and coming.
