Calvary Christian and Sickles went back and forth as the Warriors led 31-30 at the half and pulled off the victory late 60-58.
Here are five things I took away from the preseason clash.
Wilson is clutch
Rider commit Paxton Wilson has been knocking down jumpers and 3’s for a while at Calvary Christian. On Thursday night, the senior added 20 of his 28 points in the second half alone including the game-winning layup with 1.8 seconds left.
Juice Thompson delivered the perfect pass as Wilson laid it in and the Warriors walked away with the victory.
Calvary is a gritty team
Sickles has a nice three-headed monster in Bryce Workman, Bryce Beamer and Marcus Cohen, but that didn’t stop Calvary Christian from being intimidated.
Fifth-year head coach Keb Burley has done a fantastic job with this group. They remind me of Jesuit simply because you don’t expect too much from them, but they truly play as a team.
Workman and Cohen play well off one another
Senior guard Marcus Cohen had 16 points in this one while junior forward Bryce Workman led Sickles with 20 points.
Cohen and Workman were working well together all night. Cohen found Workman in the post often and it paid dividends. Both players have a quiet determination on the court.
Beamer is a team player
Sickles senior forward Bryce Beamer is a behind the scenes kind of guy. He had 10 points in this game and laid out for a couple of balls nearing out of bounds. Beamer also hauled in a couple of tough rebounds.
Neugebauer can shoot
Calvary Christian senior guard Danny Neugebauer was the next best thing behind Wilson with 10 points. He attacked the rim a ton and made plays on the ball. Expect a big season for the crafty 2017 prospect.
