Iowa Top 250 Expo: 2019/20 Top Guards (Part II)
There was an overload of talent that took the floor at the All Iowa Attack Fieldhouse on Saturday morning. And though many guards stood out, and several of the underclassmen in attendance will star on their respective teams this winter, it’s the guys highlighted below who were a cut above the rest at the Top 250 Expo.
——————————————————————————————
2021 Trey Shearer (5’8, Montezuma)
This kid isn’t even in high school yet, but the eighth grader is going to be very good for the Braves. He’s got an uncanny feel for the game, and he was raining in 3s during the skill session and during live game action. His handle is tight, and though he’s not physically developed yet he’s able to create separation with savvy and skill. He’s fun to watch.
2020 Jaxon Smith (5’8 Ankeny Centennial)
The Jaguars have a nice point guard coming through the ranks with this small but athletic guard. He’s a ball of energy and was everywhere during live game play; skying for offensive rebounds, swiping steal after steal, and showcasing a beautiful floater. His defensive instincts are great, and that alone could make him a future star in the CIML.
2019 Kris Murray (6’1 Cedar Rapids Prairie)
The son of former Iowa Hawkeye standout Kenyon Murray, Kris is seemingly just scratching the surface of his full potential. He’s 6’1, but still has a ton of room to grow. Skill-wise, it’s clear that he possesses his father’s hoops gene. He sees the floor exceptionally well, and is able to drop perfect passes in transition and set his teammates up for success. His jumper is sweet, from mid-range and deep. When he shoots you expect it to go in, and when he misses it’s not by much.
2019 Noah Hart (6’3 Waukee)
We’ve seen Hart play both point guard and shooting guard in the past, and he made it very clear today that he’s a natural point guard. His passing was outstanding, and the degree of difficulty was high on many on them. He moves the ball efficiently through the offense, and when he entered the game would make an immediate impact with high energy and smart passing. His jumper is still a strength too, and he could grow several more inches before he’s done. His charisma on the floor was noticeable also, he was having a lot of fun, and subsequently he’s a lot of fun to watch.
2019 Lino Malual (6’2 Des Moines North)
Another young Des Moines North guard with a ton of potential. Malual was one of the more athletic players in the morning session, using his great leaping ability to snare rebounds from the guard spot and disrupt shots defensively. His jumper was dropping, and it normally does. Look for Malual to have a very nice season with the Polar Bears this winter.
2020 Colby Vincent (6’3 Carroll)
Another sharpshooter coming through the Carroll ranks. This freshman shooting guard was letting it fly a ton, and it was going in…a ton. His stroke is nice, and he’s a confident shooter who can take over a game if given the opportunity. He may not get a ton of playing time on a Carroll squad with one of the best backcourts in 3A, but he should make a significant impact over the next several years.
2019 Christian Stanislav (6’2 Glenwood)
A rangy and fluid shooting guard with some decent height, Stanislav was the first player that stood out during the skill session. He was showcasing a smooth jumper from mid-range and deep, and has some nice roll on his ball, allowing for the coveted “shooter’s touch.” As he continues to develop his handles and athletic ability Stanislav could turn into a Division I type prospect.
