And senior point guard Gavin Root — PHKY’s 95th-ranked 2017 — is going to embrace it.
Root recently returned from elite camps at Trevecca Nazarene and University of Charleston, and has five schools of the Division II and Division III variety who are showing interest.
“This past summer I’ve been talking to Centre College, Ohio Northern University — those are the two D3 schools that I’m looking at. And then Trevecca in Nashville and University of Charleston out of West Virginia are the two D2 schools I’ve cut it down to. And also Hampton-Sydney, a D3 in Virginia, those are the five schools I’ve cut it down to for right now,” said Root, who currently holds no offers.
But with the enrollment of Young to North Hardin, Root feels other schools may get a chance to look at him.
“I’m going to definitely make a decision after basketball season. And I think honestly with how much hype is going to to be around our team, more options will come,” he said.
A solid point guard with a good all-around game, Root says his leadership is something he’ll be working on most this season. He went on to define his skill-set in detail.
“I’d definitely say being a leader is something I would say I’ve always wanted to be a part of my skill-set. And I would say I definitely have great ball-handling skills and great shot,” said Root. “And I think what really separates me from others is I can handle the press and be a point guard and have the leadership of a point guard, but once we get past half-court I can become shooting guard with really good vision that can create shots for others.”
This summer while playing with Louisville Prospects, Root was pleased with how he played — especially at AAU Nationals.
“We played at nationals and I played really well. I averaged 15 points and 4 assists there,” said Root. “And overall it was just a really, really good summer.”
Now, with his senior season ahead of him, and 6-foot-7 Division I prospect Trace Young playing alongside him, Root’s ready to showcase himself one last winter.
“I definitely will have a big leadership role this year. A lot of guys are going to be looking up to me and I’m definitely going to have to be more of a scoring threat this year,” said Root. “I don’t think there are a lot of teams in the state that are going to be able to match up with us man-to-man at all.”
