NCISAA powerhouse Greensboro Day School (Greensboro, NC) is loaded with talent year in and year out. One of the less herald players for the Bengals this season, is 6-foot-4 Alex Michael. Alex is receiving interest from Wofford, Winthrop, and Radford. He is ranked # 55 by PrepHoops for the Class of 2018. He has a high basketball IQ, can shoot out to the three-point line, plays with intensity on both ends of the floor. Not having Alex on the floor is a hard task with his defensive intensity, and willingness to guard the opposition’s best player. Another asset is his ability to stretch the floor with his shooting ability to open up the inside for Greensboro Day big men. Alex played this summer with Team CP3 along with three of his Greensboro Day teammates. PrepHoopsNC had the chance to catch up with Alex and talk about his summer, this upcoming high school season and his recruitment.
PrepHoopsNC: How did your second live period go? Who all have you heard from recently and who has offered up until now?
Alex Michael: It’s going well. I have heard from Wofford, Lee University and Coach Johnson said Winthrop and Radford have been in contact about me. No offers yet.
PrepHoopsNC: What are your goals for the summer and next season at your high school?
Alex Michael: My goal for the summer is to really work hard on my game and improve in all areas. This upcoming year at GDS I want to win all of the tournaments we play in. The Haeco Tournament, The Chickfila Classic, and win a State Championship. As well as the regular season conference championship.
PrepHoopsNC: What are you looking at in a school when you make that decision?
Alex Michael: As far as college, the main things I am looking for in a school are good academics, a good relationship with the coaches and players, and choosing the best fit for me.
PrepHoopsNC: What are the most important parts of your game and can you explain your game to me?
Alex Michael: I feel that the most important part of my game is my versatility. I feel that I can do everything pretty well. I can score it on the offensive end and make the extra pass to an open teammate. Defensively I can guard positions 1-4 and I rebound well as a guard. I have learned a lot from Coach Johnson and Coach Smith about defensive principles and am very comfortable on or off the ball in man to man or zone defense.
PrepHoopsNC: What are some things do you feel you need to work on?
Alex Michael: The biggest thing I think I need to work on is stepping into a leadership role this year. I am a lifer at Greensboro Day, meaning I have attended since Kindergarten. This is also my third year on the team, so I was a part of the State Championship team my freshman year that also competed in the Dicks’s National Tournament. Even though I did not play a lot that year as I was still recovering from a broken leg, I learned a lot from the upperclassman. We had a great group of seniors in Darius Moore, Peter Agba, Trevor Mayo, Marquelle McIntyre, and Paul Sprick that really mentored us younger guys. That is the kind of leadership I want to display to the current underclassmen the next two years.
Alex Michael is a Low-Major Division One recruit at this moment and with a strong junior season, look for his stock to rise.
