The Elizabeth City, North Carolina product is leaving Northeastern High School to transfer to NCISAA powerhouse Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point.
Walker is a 6-foot-3 point guard in the class of 2019. He is the son of former Elizabeth City State head coach Shawn Walker, who is now the head coach at Grambling State University.
The rising sophomore averaged 10 points per game and helped lead Northeastern High School to a 27-3 record including a 12-0 mark in the Northeastern Coastal 2-A Conference. When senior and Hampton commit Trey Carver went down with an injury in the 2-A eastern region finals, Walker took the team on his back. He would finish with 19 points in a loss to eventual state champion Farmville Central High School.
PrepHoopsNC had the chance to talk with Walker Jr., this past week and here is what he had to say.
PrepHoopsNC: Who all have you heard from recently and who has offered up until now?
Shawn Walker Jr: Recently, I haven’t heard from any new schools. I have received offers from South Carolina State, Hampton, and High Point. I’m looking forward to expanding my interest over the next 3 years at WCA.
PrepHoopsNC: What are your goals for the summer and next season at your high school?
Shawn Walker Jr: My goals are just simply to continue to improve, develop new phases to my game, and doing whatever I can do to help my team be the best that we can be. I’m a team 1st player, so whatever my coach needs me to do, I’m going to work hard to accomplish.
PrepHoopsNC: What are you looking at in a school when you make that decision?
Shawn Walker Jr: I will be searching for a school that can meet my needs both academically and athletically. It will be important to find a place that “wants” me, and will continue my development process at the collegiate level. Really hoping to find a family atmosphere that I can enjoy all aspects of the college and basketball experience.
PrepHoopsNC: What are the most important parts of your game and can you explain your game to me?
Shawn Walker Jr: I am an all around player that does numerous things. My skill level and understanding of the game I believe give me an advantage over many of my opponents. I’ve always been taught fundamentals are important, and I believe I dribble pass and shoot at a high level. I feel I can be an asset to any team, and don’t have to score to be impactful. My teammates will enjoy playing with me. I will keep my teammates happy.
PrepHoopsNC: What are some things do you feel you need to work on?
Shawn Walker Jr: I must improve on my strength and aggressiveness to be at my best. I have to get better at being in attack mode at all times. Athletically, I’d like to also improve my foot speed and explosiveness. These things improved will make me a better player
