“I’m a very strong defensive player,” Perkins said. “I block a lot of tons and alter a lot. I defend the rim and defend pick and rolls. On offense, I set a lot of screens for my guards and get them open to get to the basket. I feel like I’m a good cutter off the ball to get myself open, too.”
Perkins played a solid role in the Royals’ success last season. The player averaged 1.5 points and 0.8 rebounds per contest. Although he didn’t see a ton of action, he is ready to go to work this year.
“My goal for the high school season is to make it back to the State Tournament and advance in the Tournament,” Perkins stated. “Last year we lost in the first round. But we have to maje it through the Region, and the teams are gonna be just as tough if not tougher than they were last year, such as Campbell County.”
This summer, Perkins played with Hoop Dreams on the AAU Circuit. He said he did nothing but improve.
“I feel like I had a great summer,” he told me. “I played against very high competition and I feel like I’ve gotten better from the start of the summer to now. I’m always trying to improve, but I feel like I’ve done that from beginning to end.
“Playing with Hoop Dreams is great. Coach Q, Woo and Mike have all given me and the guys on the team all kinds of opportunities to play in front of coaches and get better in any way that we can – and I’m surrounded by great guys and players.”
In the classroom at the high school, Perkins said he is a good student.
“In the classroom I feel like I am a good student,” he said. “I take mostly AP and Honors classes and do well in them, getting mostly A’s and B’s. I have a 3.8 GPA, which I’m trying to improve this year.”
Although he doesn’t have any offers yet, Perkins says he has been shown interest from Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Wright State, and says that more coaches and programs should start to reach out because of his length.
“I think I would catch a coach’s eye because of my length, my basketball IQ, and my defensive ability,” he stated. “Helping my team shut down the middle and making it difficult for other teams to score. And my offensive skills are getting better everyday and I’m continuing to improve in every aspect of my game and getting stronger everyday.
“I think I could be an asset to any team because of my will to work hard.”
