“My game or style of play is mostly built on speed and shiftiness,” Kitchens said. “I have an explosive first step that shapes my game into being a slasher to the rim that can finish through contact. I can also change speeds on a dime, or create space to get a shot off. I’m mostly a scorer, but my penetration into the defense leads to many assists with a low turnover rate during high school seasons.
“I’ve been working with many reps on my outside shooting ability and that will shine during the upcoming season. I can also defend at a high level. To me, I pride myself more on the defensive end because I know the offensive talent will be there already.”
Kitchens played a solid role in the Pioneers’ success last season. Whenever the guard was on the floor, he did what he needed to do. Although he many of not seen a ton of action, he is ready to go to work this year.
“My goals for this upcoming basketball season are to win as many games as possible, improve our record from last year, finally win another Regional Tournament and compete for a State Championship as a team,” Kitchens stated. “Second, always and individually, I would like to lead my team and Region/State in overall stats. Just try to establish myself as the best player in the class at the point guard spot or any position which I know I will be.”
Kitchens played with Spiece Legacy on the AAU Circuit this summer. He says he played pretty well.
“Overall, I performed pretty good,” the guard told me. “The season did not end how I wanted, but I got some exposure and was invited to D2 Elite Camps.”
In the classroom at Simon Kenton, the student-athlete is a hard-worker.
“I am a hardworking student in the classroom atmosphere,” Kitchens said. “To me, grades are an important part of my life – not just for school purposes. Most of my school schedule consists of AP or Honors courses. This past school year, I maintained, for the most part, a 3.5 GPA.”
As the all-around athlete excels both on and off the court, he is now working on attracting college coaches and programs.
“College coaches and programs should take notice to my game because I play with an edge, an underdog mentality, and with an up-tempo style of play,” Kitchens said. “I have a never-give-up attitude and will do whatever it takes to win. The most important aspect of my game, to me, is the chip on my shoulder.
“I’ve been overlooked so much that my hard work and willingness to win will show this upcoming year.”
