David Thompson starred at Crest HS and was later a #1 NBA Draft pick out of NC State University. Shelby HS has Alvin Gentry, who is a NBA head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans and Gabe DeVoe, an all-state selection now playing in the ACC for the Clemson Tigers.
5-foot-11 point guard Quay Kimble is the next star at Shelby HS after averaging nearly 20 points per game this past season. Lightning quick and a really effective scorer, Kimble is the best basketball player out of the Shelby area since Gabe DeVoe graduated in 2014 and now is logging significant minutes at Clemson University.
Longtime head coach Aubrey Hollifield says “Quay is the best scorer other than DeVoe that I have coached here at Shelby. If he was the height of Gabe, he would be getting offers from all over the board.” He is a 1,000 career point scorer through his first 3 years at Shelby HS and has a career average of 41% from the 3-point line. “My most important part of my game is I hustle every play and I am a floor general. I’m a past first guard but if I need to score the ball I can and will. Playing with my high school I changed to a score first guard sort of because I had to lead my team to victory.”
Lenoir Rhyne, Richmond, North Greenville, Winston Salem State are schools that have expressed interest in the floor general who led the Golden Lions to the Western Regional semi-finals and a 24-6 overall record. “My goals for this summer is to at least win the last two big tournaments we (PSB Select) have to play in July. For high school to keep filling up the stat sheet and being a leader on the court to lead Shelby back to the NCHSAA tournament.”
