Continue ReadingCarnival Hoopfest held primarily in the Convocation Center on the campus of Xavier University in New Orleans by South Hoop Fest provided an opportunity to not only see some of the top teams in the state grassroots wise but other up and coming players as well on the court against high level competition. We’ll break down the 2018 and 2019 prospects who played well. The 2017 can be found here.
2018
Parker Edwards (6’3 G, Elfrid Payton Elite 16u) – Edwards was absolutely on fire from downtown this weekend. On Saturday he hit 9 three’s against New Orleans Elite and followed it up with 5 more in the next game. Talented with the ball in his hands as well as a scorer, Edwards is rising quickly this summer. Needs to continue to mold his body and defend with his IQ.
Devaughn Thomas (6’6 G/F, Elfrid Payton Elite 16u) – Thomas’ toughness has been in question in the past but this summer he’s done a great job of playing through contact and with authority. Smooth from the outside and plays well above both off the catch and the drive. Has the length to defend multiple positions as well. As aggressiveness rises, so will he.
Mike Thomas (6’3 G/F, Lake Charles Cavaliers 17u) – Thomas played up in the 17u division and more than held his own. He battles for everything and even knocked down a few jumpers outside. He’s got a lot of polishing to do with his skill work but there will never be a question about his motor or effort on the court.
Trevian Lane (6’7 F, New Orleans Elite 16u) – Lane knocked down numerous jumpers every game and showed off an extremely high skill level with the ball in his hands. He’ll need to get in better shape to defend the perimeter more but he’s got a nice frame and some budding athleticism to back it up. Could be a bright future.
Isaiah Lewis (6’3 G, New Orleans Elite 16u) – Lewis is built as well put together as someone could ask to be. Thick frame but extremely fit and athleticism through the roof. He’s a bully with the ball in his hands and this weekend showed off the improved IQ and jumper that will be needed as he progresses to the next level.
Calvin Adams (5’10 PG, Stateline Raiders 16u) – Adams runs a team extremely well but played off the ball a lot this weekend as a spot up shooter for the Raiders. Extremely long and active on the defensive end; he led the Raiders defense throughout the weekend that kept them in every game and garnered a few high level wins as well.
2019
Tylan Pope (6’5 F, Elfrid Payton Elite 15u) – Pope is force inside and impresses every time we get the chance to watch him play. He’s as fast rim to rim as most guards and moves like them as well except he possesses a thick frame and extremely quick bounce that allows him to play above the rim. Against bigger players he was still able to make moves in the post.
Moses Ngodock (6’6 F/C, F.A.S.T. 15u) – There are players you can tell are still learning the game and Moses is one. He’s got the length, athleticism, and even some skill to play against more seasoned players but there is often a bit of late reactions or failure to step up on defense when needed. Once the experience level improves, so will his stock.
Donte Mitchell (5’10 SG, Team Mitch 15u) – One of the best shooters in the gym regardless of class, Mitchell was very adept in carrying his team through scoring droughts from both well behind the line and attacking off the bounce. He’ll need to grow or develop the ability to make those around him better but as far as young pure shooters go; he’s one of the better ones.
Tyrece Thompson (6’2 G, Treasure Coast Elite 16u) – Thompson from Florida really showed off his bounce and ability to score with numerous 20+ point performances this weekend. The high flying guard is a football prospect too but if he continues to score and fly around like he did this weekend, basketball coaches will come a calling.
