Continue ReadingJesuit 2018 guard Nick Weir is going to have a bigger role in his junior season. After appearing in only four games, the 6’2″, 155-pound shooting guard figures to be a key contributor with four seniors (G D.J. Snyder, F Lee Green, F Ryan Fleming, F Mike Sierra) all gone.
The Tigers went 25-6 last season as they fell to Bishop Kenny, 55-54 in a back and forth battle in the 5A region semifinal at Lakeland. Weir watched from bench as his team nearly won its first state title since 2013 when his brother J.J. was a top player. He had this to say about last season’s run.
“We had a great group of senior leaders and I saw how committed they were to working hard every single day in practice. I also learned the Jesuit motto which was: play hard, play smart and always put the team first. I saw how playing smart kept us in games. We won a bunch of real close games, including the regional final game that got us to the state Final Four in Lakeland.”
How would he break down his own game?
“I’m a combo guard who can play multiple positions, one, two, three or even stretch four. I have worked hard on my three-point shot and ball-handling the past two years as well as a pull up jump shot. I would like to improve on finishing around the rim. I want to be the best conditioned player on the court at all times.”
Weir plays AAU ball for the Tampa Titans 18′ team.
“The experience has been great. They have given me the opportunity to work on all facets of my game, including becoming more of a threat in the open court and finishing around the rim. They also play exclusively man defense, which is different than Jesuit and helped me become a more well rounded defender.”
He has no offers or interest yet, but at this point he’s a rather unknown. That will change this season when he steps into an important role under intelligent head coach Neal Goldman. Weir is a 2018 prospect to keep a close eye on this year.
